It’s the May 2007 Elections!

Have you decided on who you will write down on that piece of paper? You only got 2 days to go so make that important decision!

- Do you have a list of your candidates? (Senators, Congressman, Governor (+vice), Mayor (+vice), Councilors, Partylist) Make a codigo of your chosen candidates to bring with you when you vote. This will save you time and you wouldn’t forget to write down your choices.

- Know your precinct beforehand if possible. This will also lessen your time looking for the venue.

- Bring your own ballpen. There will be pens available but you’ll never know. It’s better to be prepared and it’s just a pen anyway – fits right in your bag/pocket.

- As much as possible, avoid leaving blanks on your ballot. This is your chance to choose who you want to be placed in the government. It’s like being given 3 wishes by a genie and you only want to use 1. =)

- Last but not the least, vote wisely!

Last March 28 Wednesday, 2 men armed with guns and grenades took over a passenger bus near Manila’s city hall and held hostage 32 school children and two teachers. The two hostage takers – Jun Ducat and Cesar Carbonell.

The demands were to provide better education to the children, plus a call to end corruption in the country which the government has failed to answer. Ducat also called on voters to be careful on who they choose as they are same people involved in corruption. After 10 hours (including talks with Sen. Bong Revilla and Chavit Singson), he surrendered and accepted his consequences.

“Masakit sa akin na sa isang marahas na pamamaraan at sinangkot ko pa ang 30 bata, masakit sa akin at tanggap ko ang lahat ng parusang aabutin ko. Gusto ko lang imulat ang sambayanang Pilipino, ngayon po ay eleksyon. Huwag nating iasa ang kinabuksan natin at buhay natin sa mga pulitiko.” Ducat said.

Due to the incident, the Presidential Anti-Graft and Corruption will look into the complaints of Ducat. The Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare and Development will help as well.

Despite the law breaking, Ducat’s friends, neighbors, plus the students and their families still show sympathy for they know Ducat is really a good man.

This recent event can be seen in different perspectives.

Was Ducat’s hostage taking a good thing in order to be heard? Or not?

And politicians such as Revilla and Singson – should they even be involved? Were they there to stop the crisis or was there a political agenda to it?

We live in a democratic country.
Anyone can run for a position in government. Any sex. any status. Any occupation.
As long as they pass the requirements of COMELEC, they can file their certificate of candidacy. There’s nothing wrong if a person runs for a position.
The most important thing is, they have good intentions and can help our country.

We have encountered different types of leaders in our lives. The super organized planner during group works in school. The determined young man heading the prayer rally at your local community. Or maybe the tough, demanding boss from the office.

It’s election time soon and politicians need your vote more than ever. It’s not just time to hear empty promises and their speeches but you can empower yourself to ask what they have done in their term to help the community.
